Despite receiving recognition from the Hollywood Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the actor conveyed his bittersweet feelings about Greta Gerwig, the director, and Margot Robbie, the lead character in the movie based on the Mattel doll, not receiving any nominations.

Hollywood Academy of Motion Picture Arts

The Hollywood Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled the 2024 Oscar nominations on Tuesday. The movie with the most nominations was Oppenheimer, which was followed by The Moon Killers and Poor Creatures.

Barbie, one of the great favorites, will only compete in eight categories; nevertheless, neither Margot Robbie, the film’s protagonist, nor director Greta Gerwig were given any consideration. Ryan Gosling, who won an award and is on the shortlist for best supporting actor, expressed his disappointment at the circumstances.

“In a year with so many excellent films, I am honored to have been recognised by my peers with such renowned artists. The actor wrote a press release saying, “And I never thought I was going to say this, but I also feel incredibly honoured and proud that the nomination was for the interpretation of a plastic doll named Ken.”

Margot Robbie

“But there is no Ken without Barbie,” he went on. And without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two main creators of this iconic and well acclaimed movie, there would be no Barbie movie.

Without their brilliance, tenacity, and talent, none of the actors in the movie could have received any notoriety. It would be an understatement to say that I’m sorry they weren’t nominated in their respective categories,” he objected.

“Despite all odds, they made history, broke our hearts, made us laugh, and all with just two soulless, skimpily dressed, and thankfully crotchless dolls.”The actor said, “His work should be recognised along with the other very deserving nominees.”

“Having said that, I am very happy for América Ferrara and the other incredible artists who contributed their talent to make this such an innovative film,” he stated in closing.

America Ferrera

Ferrara followed the same path and was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the movie. “Being recognised among the talented artists who have produced stunning and significant work this year surprises and deeply moves me.

Along with my fellow Latino nominees, I am thrilled to be able to represent Latinos at the ceremony this year. I’m ecstatic to recognise and honour my amazing Barbie family’s achievements. Greta and Margot elevated the standard and created history. They have had an industrial and cultural influence that will last for decades, and I am really appreciative that they asked me to be a part of it,” she said.

Margot & Greta Nomination

The actress told Variety, “I was incredibly disappointed that neither Margot nor Greta were nominated.” She continued. “Greta has accomplished nearly everything a filmmaker needs to do to be nominated: she created this universe and took something that most people didn’t think had any intrinsic value and made it into a worldwide sensation.”

It is sad that it is not included in the list.” Ferrara said of her colleague, who provided the skin for Mattel’s renowned talking doll: “What she accomplished as an actress is totally incredible.” She gives her character a great deal of heart, humour, depth, joy, and fun. I thought of her as a teacher.
